while recording this album this summer, I saw news story after news story about climate change- from melting permafrost and burning tundra fires to rising sea levels and ever more severe and damaging tropical storms. I couldn't help but think that, in many small ways, the future would be a series of "lasts". Our last chance to see a glacier- our last chance to witness various endangered species in the wild- perhaps even our last chance to appreciate nature as a beautiful thing, and not a source of fear. Once, long ago, mankind cowered in caves, hoping not to be eaten by lions, and trembled at the rumblings of distant thunder. We lived in fear of nature. It may be that we are returning to that state of mind. Anyway- I thought it would be nice to think about taking stock in what we can appreciate now- while it is still here- and as much as we can- taking some time out to experience what's left of the natural world.
